Independent Study Film/Video Program

This program is offered both in the spring and fall semesters. It allows students to design their own program, in addition to enrolling in Academy courses. The student is required to enroll in AOC’s “Overview and Introduction to Film/Video Course.” Individual filmmakers will be supervised and mentored in the production of a film or video by both a working professional and a college film graduate. This program is for both undergraduate and graduate students, however it does not offer any liberal arts courses. If a student qualifies, they may act as an observer on actual productions.
The film/video production courses at the Studio are designed in four modular sections, over a period of twelve weeks. Each course will be for three hours per day, five days a week, for three weeks, for a total of forty-five hours. A student can select no more than two productions courses per semester.
Overview & Introduction to Film/Video Production:
This overview course will consist of a minimum of sixty hours of both instruction and observing productions at the Karamanos Studio and on location.
The course includes:
1. set etiquette - how to behave on a live set.
2. all types of cameras and lighting both in the studio & on location.
3. acting for the camera & directing.
4. preparing a short screenplay for production.
5. basic conversational Greek.
In addition, the course covers the Historical Sites in Athens & the Greek Mainland: The student will visit historical sites and museums in Athens; including the Acropolis, Greek & Roman Agoras, National Archeological Museum, the Cycladic Museum, the Byzantine Museum, plus a day trip to the ancient site of Delphi.

Creative Writing & Short Screenplays:
Mr. Chris Canaan will be teaching a course “Telling Your Personal Story in A Short Screenplay,” in the fall.
Mr. Canaan is a leading Hollywood screenwriter, who has written feature films, television films and series. He has won numerous awards including an Emmy. He has taught screenwriting at UCLA extension for the past decade. Please see Mr. Canaan's resume under faculty.

Students have the option of arranging their own housing and can deduct $3,500
from the tuition.
College credit can be arranged at the student’s home university or college.
College credit can also be provided by the University of Indianapolis in Athens,
via a transcript for most of AOC’s courses. Graduate students must be registered at an American college in the United States to receive credit.

Students have the option of arranging their own housing and can deduct $3,500 from their tuition. AOC can assist the student with finding accommodations with the following organizations in Athens; University of Indianapolis and Athens Studios. On the island of Paros, where certain courses will be conducted during the month of September, the student can find housing with Anthippi Studios. For admission to any of AOC's programs, a student must be interviewed by telephone or in person before acceptance. The film/video programs are intensive and provide hands- on experience. Space is limited and prospective students are selected on merit. No pervious film/video experience is necessary. All courses are taught in English.
Production of Student Video/Film:
Students have the option of filming their project by using a digital video camera or film. If a student selects to film using either a 35mm or 16mm camera, there will be an additional charge for camera equipment, film stock, developing & printing. Digital camera will be supplied by AOC without charge.
The course includes post production & editing. A student has the option of using final cut pro on Apple computers or Avid.
Historical Tour of the Aegean:
The tour includes a ten day tour of the Greek Islands. This course concentrates on the ancient civilizations of the Athenians in Delos, the Minoans in Crete and Santorini, and the Cycladic civilization in Paros and Mykonos.
Students are responsible for their housing and meals. Transportation will supplied by AOC.
Production Set Experience:
For students who qualify, to observe and act as interns on an actual production.
Documentary Video/ Filmmaking:
For students who do not wish to produce a short screenplay, but instead produce a documentary. A student has the option of filming their project by using a digital video camera or film. American Producing & Financing/Distribution:
How to produce programming for features, television, cable, dvd and the internet. This course will cover the roles of managers, agents, studios, lawyers, distributors, and how to produce and distribute.
