Introduction to the New Zealand Film Industry

The New Zealand film industry began in 1913 when three films were produced based upon stories from the Maroi people. Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy in 2001-2003 brought the industry to world wide attention. The start of modern cinema began in the 1970’s with Roger Donaldson’s “Sleeping Dogs.” This success encouraged other film-makers. In 1993 Jane Campion’s “The Piano” won three Academy Awards, the first time a New Zealand film was honored.

A wide range of film-makers are living and working in New Zealand. Depending upon the schedules of these film-makers, students will have the opportunity to visit or attend lectures by the leading film professionals in New Zealand.
