ACADEMY OF CINEMA STAGECRAFT PRODUCTION
AOC begins pilot program in stagecraft production in Florida
AOC’s Stagecraft Production Program is located in West Palm Beach, Florida. In the fall of 2007, AOC will begin a pilot program in stagecraft production, which will allow qualified students to be trained to work on union productions earning $15 per hour.

The training program uses the same curriculum and instructors that has been used by the International Alliance of Stage and Theatrical Employees, (IASTE or IA), the largest motion picture and stage union in the United States.

AOC will guarantee students who have successfully completed the program the opportunity to be employed on six union productions. The student must enroll in a twenty-four hour course and pass five examinations, to receive an AOC certificate.

The program is divided into five segments: a free four hour orientation course, where a student will be evaluated as to their capabilities. If the student passes a written examination and is selected by AOC, they can in enroll in AOC’s basic stagecraft program and proceed to a five hour course. They will be required to pass each five hour course, in order to proceed to the next level of instruction. There are four courses of five hours each. The tuition for the full program is $750.00. The student will receive an AOC Certification of Completion in Basic Stagecraft, if they successfully complete the program. This certificate and an application must be submitted to the union of Stagehands, local #500 of the IA, to be considered for a temporary permit to be employed on six union productions. Students must be eighteen years of age and receive a “port pass” from Homeland Security to work on union productions. If the student is not hired by the union, AOC will refund the tuition.

Once the student has completed working on six union productions, they will return to AOC for further training, in order for them to be placed on the union’s availability C list. This arrangement will allow students who qualify to continue their education in AOC’s basic stagecraft production and at the same time to work on union productions.

If the student successfully completes the above training, they can elect to enroll in the AOC’s Apprentice Stagecraft Program, which will give them the necessary instruction to apply for the IA program. If the student is selected into the IA’s three year stagecraft program, they will be eligible to apply for full IA union membership. If they are accepted into the IA, this would allow them to work on IA union productions anywhere in the United States.
